Toyota Supra Mk5 Ends Production with Final Edition, But the Name Will Return.
The Toyota Supra, one of the most celebrated sports cars in automotive history, is bidding farewell, for now. With the Mk5’s production winding down and the Final Edition marking the end of this generation, enthusiasts might have expected a long hiatus before its return. However, Toyota executives have confirmed that a successor is already in the works, and it won’t take decades to arrive.

In an interview with MotorTrend, Cooper Ericksen, Toyota North America’s senior vice president of Product Planning and Strategy, acknowledged that a new-generation Toyota Supra is in the pipeline. While he didn’t reveal an official timeline, he assured that Toyota aims to keep the gap between the Mk5 and its successor significantly shorter than the 21-year wait between the Mk4 and Mk5 models.
While Ericksen didn’t offer a specific reason for halting Supra production, he hinted that rising costs due to new regulations and investments played a significant role. Additionally, sales figures may have contributed to the decision, as Toyota only sold 2,615 units in the US last year.

Despite its popularity among sports car enthusiasts, maintaining the Supra under current regulations and production costs has become increasingly difficult. Toyota has focused its investment on core vehicles like the Camry and RAV4, leading to the discontinuation of the current-generation Toyota Supra. Ericksen emphasized that the next Supra will need to be built on a completely new platform, which is a key factor in determining its development timeline.
One of the biggest questions surrounding the next-generation Supra is whether Toyota will continue its partnership with BMW. The Mk5 Supra shared a platform and engine with the BMW Z4, sparking debates among purists about its authenticity. Toyota has yet to confirm whether it will collaborate with another automaker for the upcoming model, or develop it entirely in-house.

Additionally, fans have their wishlist for the next iteration. While some hope for a V8-powered Supra, others argue that a manual transmission option at launch is more important. With automakers increasingly shifting toward electrification, an electrified or hybrid Supra wouldn’t be entirely out of the question.
