Nissan’s cutting-edge Variable Compression Turbo (VC-Turbo) engine, once hailed for its promise of performance, efficiency, and reduced emissions, is now prompting a massive recall involving over 443,000 vehicles. The Nissan Rogue from 2021 to 2024 has a 1.5L VC-Turbo three-cylinder engine. The Nissan Altima from 2019 to 2020 features a 2.0L VC-Turbo four-cylinder engine. The Infiniti QX50, produced from 2019 to 2022, and the Infiniti QX55, from 2022, also use similar engines. About 5% of the recalled vehicles, roughly 22,200 engines, may need replacement.

What’s Causing the Problem?
The VC-Turbo’s complex variable compression system uses several bearing links, including the main, A-, C-, and L-links. Nissan warns that these bearings can wear down over time. When they do, metallic debris may appear in the engine oil. Drivers might see warning lights on the dashboard or notice rough engine operation. If the issue continues, it can lead to complete engine failure.

How Nissan Is Responding
Authorized dealers will check the oil for metal shavings, which can indicate bearing problems early on. If debris is found, owners will get a full engine replacement. For Rogue models, the service includes replacing the oil pan and doing an oil change.
Altima, QX50, and QX55 owners will receive a standard oil change. All these services are free. The notices start on August 25, 2025. The targeted owners are those linked to serial numbers known to have issues.
