Ford Recalls Over 490,000 Ford Explorer SUVs

Ford Recalls Over 490,000 Ford Explorer SUVs from 2016–2017 Over B-Pillar Trim Detachment Risk.

Ford has announced the recall of 492,145 Ford Explorer SUVs from the 2016 and 2017 model years due to concerns about the B-pillar trim detaching while driving. This issue poses a potential safety hazard for drivers and those nearby, as loose trim pieces could fly off at high speeds, increasing the risk of road debris incidents.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from a foam ring that was added to the back of the B-pillar trim during production. This ring, combined with inconsistent hand roller installation, has led to outward pressure that may cause the trim to loosen over time.

Affected owners may notice wind noise or rattling sounds while driving, or they may visually observe the trim separating from the top of the front doors when getting into or out of the vehicle.

Ford’s Response and Next Steps

Ford has already notified dealerships about the issue in late May 2025, and interim owner notification letters are scheduled to be sent between June 9–13, 2025. At this stage, Ford is still working on a remedy, but once a fix is developed, the automaker will contact affected owners and instruct them to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealership for free repairs.

As of May 2025, Ford has stated that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this recall. However, the company urges all affected owners to pay attention to any unusual signs and to follow official recall instructions once a solution is provided.
