The Nissan Frontier Pro Plug-in Hybrid Pickup Truck was developed in partnership with Dongfeng.
Nissan has taken a bold leap into the future of automotive innovation with its latest unveiling: a plug-in hybrid Frontier Pro pickup truck. This groundbreaking development marks a pivotal moment for the brand and highlights Nissan’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions, designed to maintain performance without compromising eco-consciousness.

At the Shanghai Auto Show earlier today, Nissan revealed the Frontier Pro—a mid-size pickup truck based on the Nissan Dongfeng Z9 model. While the Frontier Pro is initially slated for release in China, Nissan plans to export this model to international markets, paving the way for potential breakthroughs in the mid-size truck segment.

Powertrain and Performance The Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine combined with a transmission-mounted electric motor. Together, this dynamic duo delivers an impressive 402 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. With a targeted 83 miles of EV-only range under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), the Frontier Pro sets new standards for efficiency and performance.

Although challenges surrounding trade tariffs between the U.S. and China may limit the availability of this model in North America, Nissan has hinted at plans for a next-generation Frontier with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. According to Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan’s planning chief for North America, electrification is key to ensuring compliance with emissions standards while maintaining the ruggedness and towing capacity truck enthusiasts demand.

Future of the Frontier Lineup Looking ahead, Nissan is considering merging the Frontier with its Navara mid-size pickup truck to create a global platform capable of supporting multiple powertrains, including plug-in hybrids and internal combustion engines. This ambitious vision aligns with the company’s goal to streamline production and cater to a wider audience, both domestically and internationally.

As the automotive industry continues its shift toward electrification, Nissan’s innovative approach to plug-in hybrid trucks signals a promising future for environmentally friendly yet performance-driven vehicles. U.S. consumers can look forward to a revamped Frontier, expected to hit the market around 2028, as Nissan refines its strategy to meet evolving demands.
