2025 Ford Explorer Recalled: Powertrain Software Bug Affects Over 25,000 SUVs
April 17, 2025 – Ford Motor Company has announced a recall affecting 24,655 units of its popular 2025 Ford Explorer due to faulty PCM software that could cause park system damage or engine stalls while driving.
Ford’s investigation found that the PCM may reset unexpectedly, leading to two major concerns:
- Park System Damage: If the reset happens while the vehicle is in motion at over 10 mph (16 km/h), it could result in park pawl ratcheting, potentially damaging the park system.
- Engine Stall Risk: A sudden reset may cause a temporary loss of acceleration or even a complete loss of motive power if the PCM resets eight consecutive times within 18 seconds.

- Ford first identified the problem in Summer 2024.
- A software fix was implemented in production on September 6, 2024.
- However, despite the fix, Ford continued investigating and officially filed recall documentation in April 2025.
- Before issuing the recall, 366 potential claims related to the defect were reported in the U.S. and Canada.

Ford has confirmed that there have been no crashes or property damage linked to this issue. Owners will get a notice by first-class mail between May 26 and May 30, 2025. The letter will include instructions to get a free software update at Ford service centers. The update uses remedy software with part number SB5A-14C204-VD.
