Lada Azimut Crossover: Russia’s Iconic Automaker Returns to the Segment After Decades.
In a bold move that marks its re-entry into the global crossover conversation, Russian carmaker Avtovaz has introduced the Lada Azimut—its first new crossover in nearly 30 years. Positioned to rival popular compact SUVs like the Toyota Corolla Cross, the Azimut carries historical weight and modern ambition.
With nearly three decades since its last major crossover debut, Lada’s Azimut symbolizes more than just a new model—it’s a statement of technological self-reliance. Boasting 996 new or improved parts, the vehicle is based on the Vesta platform (originally developed with Renault), though Lada emphasizes that it has been designed and built independently, highlighting the absence of Western involvement amid ongoing geopolitical shifts.

2026 Lada Azimut: Design and Features:
Visually, the Azimut blends European crossover aesthetics with a boxy, utilitarian charm. Though reminiscent of Renault’s Dacia designs, it features a sharp, well-laid-out interior (at least in renderings), designed for both style and practicality. The exterior leans toward clean lines and solid proportions, aimed at appealing to both domestic and aspirational export markets, despite current trade restrictions.
One of the most unconventional aspects of the Azimut is its infotainment system, developed by Russian state-owned bank Sber. The system enables digital payments for fuel, remote vehicle control via the Sber app, and integrates with SberMobile data services, showcasing an ecosystem-focused approach to vehicle connectivity that’s unusual but innovative.

Lada Azimut Crossover: Engine
At launch, the Azimut will offer two petrol engine options—a 1.6-liter producing 120 hp and a 1.8-liter producing 132 hp—paired with either a 6-speed manual or CVT. A more powerful 150 hp turbocharged variant with a traditional torque converter automatic is reportedly in development for future release.

Despite global challenges, Lada claims the Azimut delivers the best price-to-quality ratio in Russia’s current market. With Chinese brands entering the fray and domestic options limited, Avtovaz continues to hold a significant market share, estimated at around one-third of all passenger car sales in Russia.
