Ford Mustang Reimagined: See the Jaw-Dropping Designs by Chinese Students
Ford Motor Company has once again pushed the boundaries of vehicle design by sponsoring an intriguing competition in China that challenged design students to redesign the legendary Ford Mustang. This daring effort demonstrates Ford’s commitment to developing young talent while also highlighting the brand’s forward-thinking approach during difficult times.
The Competition: Unleashing Creativity In December 2024, Ford launched the “Mustang: A Grand Tour of Re-imagination” program, involving 25 brilliant students from 22 prestigious colleges and universities across China. This effort culminated in February 2025, when eight finalists earned the rare opportunity to work with Ford’s design professionals at their Shanghai Design Center. Their task was clear yet daring—reimagine the future of the legendary muscle car while respecting its heritage.

Under the supervision of Max Wolff, Ford Design Director, the students collaborated with experienced designers to ensure their futuristic concepts could be turned into realistic models. The results were nothing short of extraordinary—innovative designs blending cutting-edge technology with the retro charm of the original Mustang.

Three standout Ford Mustang concepts were shortlisted:
Mustang Mach-S Concept: Liu Sizhuo of Tsinghua University created this concept, which reimagines the Mustang as a shooting brake, combining functionality with the recognizable Mustang look.
Mustang Super Utility Concept: Designed by Xie Yian, this electric-powered pickup truck combines coupe-like styling with the functionality of a utility vehicle—a bold departure from traditional muscle car designs.
Mustang Hyper Tandem Concept: Lai Yushun’s masterwork draws inspiration from motor racing and fighter jets, resulting in an aggressive yet elegant appearance with a cockpit-style cabin.
These designs will be on display at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, offering enthusiasts a glimpse into the future of automotive innovation.

Ford’s Strategic Shift: Navigating Global Trade Challenges While Ford nurtures creativity through initiatives like this, the automaker faces significant hurdles in the Chinese market due to escalating trade tariffs. Following the US government’s 145% tariffs on Chinese imports, China responded with a hefty 150% tax on American products. As a result, Ford has temporarily ceased exporting models like the Mustang and F-150 Raptor to China, focusing instead on shipping components and transmissions.

Nice looking designs. My only initial problem with the design is that I was slightly reminded of the Corvette. I am neither a Ford or Chevy guy. I however I wouldn’t wish to be looking at a Pony car and be reminded of the Corvette. That seems like an insult to both G.M. and Ford.
